Chapter 8
After that, things did not go smoothly at all. Our BSC meeting that afternoon was very tense. We spoke to one another only about baby-sitting business.
The next day, Mary Anne and I intentionally didn’t come to school dressed as teachers. And when I saw the kinds of outfits the kids were wearing, I was glad we’d boycotted the event.
One boy wore an ugly mask and a wore pocket pencil holder, obviously mocking a science teacher named Mr. Harold, who isn’t too good-looking. I happen to think Mr. Harold is pretty nice even if he isn’t handsome.
I saw another boy dressed as a woman teacher who happens to be heavy. He had padded himself to look super fat.
There were endless insulting outfits. What was the point? To embarrass the teachers? That sure showed school spirit.
By Tuesday everyone knew about the petition. Lots of kids were dying to sign it. I was constantly being stopped in the hall by kids I didn’t even know. Emily Bernstein told me they were crowding into the SMS Express office to sign before homeroom. Mary Anne got out own copy of the petition so we could rustle up more signatures.
And the kids who were for School Spirit Month were really mad at us.
When Mary Anne and I handed the petition to a boy named Trevor Sandbourne, another boy Bruce Jamison, ripped it out of his hands. He was about to tear is up when Logan came along and yanked it back from him. “I don’t think that belongs to you, Bruce,” he said.
Bruce glared at Logan. “What’s the matter, Bruno? Is your girlfriend telling you want to do now?”
Logan handed the petition back to Mary Anne. “She’s entitled to her opinion,” Logan said calmly.
“You should be embarrassed to go out with her,” Bruce snarled as he loped of down the hall.
“What a lowlife,” Trevor sneered.
“Thanks,” Mary Anne said to Logan.
“No problem. This is still America. You do have a right to say what you like.”
Unfortunately, a lot of kids didn’t think we had the right. I found a hate letter stuffed in my locker at the end of the day. I won’t bother to repeat all the things it said. The most frightening part was the last sentence. Some people could get hurt if this petition isn’t stopped.
My brain whirled in disbelief. Someone was actually threatening to hurt Mary Anne and me over this. These couldn’t be the same kids I went to school with every day. They just couldn’t be.
But they were.
When we arrived at school the next day I saw that the SMS Crowd office was crowded. Emily saw Mary Anne and me, and waved us over. “Kids today are telling be that they wouldn’t be signing except that they’re so disgusted except that they’re so disgusted buy the way the pro-Sprit Month kids are acting that they don’t want to have anything to do with them or with Spirit Month.”
I looked in at the Express office and was pleased at the number of kids I saw.
